Swiatek wins the San Diego Open
In an open that was filled with fixture scheduling issues, Swiatek managed to win and stand on top again.
She defeated qualifier Donna Vekic who played earlier today in 3 sets 6-3 3-6 6-0 to win her 8th title of the year.
Swiatek hit 3 aces, won 79% of her serve points, 92% of her service games and converted four out of the six break points she had during the match.
"I wanted to go all in" Swiatek said of her approach going into the deciding set of the new WTA 500 event. "Knowing how well she serves, I just wanted to be more loosened up on my return games, not to think too much, use my intuition and fight for every ball".
She also had nice words for Vekic who underwent a knee surgery after last year's Australian open "I'm really happy that you're back and hopefully we are going to play many finals," Swiatek said.
Swiatek had defeated Qinwen Zheng (6-4 4-6 6-1), Coco Guaff ( 6-0, 6-3), Jessica Pegula (4-6 6-2 6-2) to reach the finals while Vekic took out a whole lot of top seeds after qualifying for the tournament, she outclassed Maria Sakkari (7-6(7-3) 6-1), Karolina Pilskova (6-3, 6-2), Aryna Sabalenka (6-4 6-7(5-7) 6-1) and Danielle Collins (6-4 4-6 7-6(5-7) before today's final.
Swiatek now holds a firm grip on the No 1 spot and she doesn't want to leave anytime soon, she is in her best form ahead of the WTA finals coming up soon.
Worth a mention is Jessica Pegula and Coco Guaff won the doubles tittle. Their 4th title together.
