Daniil Medvedev wins the Erste Bank Open
Danil Medvedev won his 15th ATP title today, he defeated Denis Shapovalov in three sets, lost the first 4-6 and won the other two 6-3, 6-2.
He is the latest man to get qualification into the ATP finals in Turin and his win has moved him closer to the No 3 on the ATP rankings.
Medvedev dropped set for the first time today, losing the first set to a resurgent Shapovalov, he won 46% of the points compared to Shapovalov 64%. He recovered in the 2nd, saving 5 of the six break points he faced, he won half of the return points, 67% of the total games in the second set. He continued in the same pace in the 3rd avoiding double faults, won more games here 75%, he didn't face any break point and he converted two of the six break chances he had, hitting 8 winners to win the championship crown.
"I am really happy," Medvedev said. "This match was the best of the week because Denis was really playing unreal until probably 4-3 in the second set. He dropped his level by maybe two per cent and I was able to use it. This is one of the best victories when you know your opponent is on top of you, but you try and stay there and do what you can."
He defeated Basiladhvilli, Thiem, Sinner and Dimitrov to win this trophy. Shapovalov also had a great time defeating Rodionov, Fritz, Evans and Conic before today. He's now up to the 16th position on the ATP live rankings.
