WTA Finals: Iga Swiatek vs Caroline Garcia Match Preview
Ons Jabeur kept her hopes alive after defeating Jessica Pegula in three sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 yesterday.
Earlier today, Marri Sakkari continued her impressive run as she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in two straight sets.
The WTA finals continues today, Iga Swiatek and Caroline Garcia will face each other to determine who qualifies first. They both won their first match respectively.
Fottennis gives you the preview of this upcoming match.
Iga Swiatek begins her second WTA Finals appearance with a statement 6-2, 6-3 dismissal of Daria Kasatkina, her fifth convincing straight-set win over the Russian this season. She saved all three breakpoints in the process of extending her winning streak against top 10 players to 13 matches.
Last year, she could win only one match in her WTA Finals debut in Guadalajara and stopped well short of the semifinals. She is back in the event as the outright favorite following a season in which she lifted eight titles from 16 tournaments and has won a total of 65 matches (49 in straight sets).
There was a brief moment in mid season when she struggled after the end of her 37-match winning streak. She soon returned to her sizzling mode having won 15 of her last 16 matches, leading to titles at the US Open and San Diego, and a close runner-up finish to Barbora Krejcikova in Ostrava.
Caroline Garcia was broken in her first game of the week but she soon ran over Coco Gauff, 6-4, 6-3, in 78 minutes. She would be mighty relieved given she arrived after winning only one match in her last three events combined, beating Rebecca Marino in a deciding tiebreak in Guadalajara.
In 2017, she made her singles debut in the WTA Finals in Singapore and reached all the way to the semifinals; only three players have longer gaps between their first and second appearances in this event. In addition, she's also been a two-time participant in doubles: 2015 (RR) and 2016 (SF).
Ranked 79th at the start of June, she has won a tour-leading 33 matches in this period and win Bad Homburg, Warsaw, and Cincinnati. She's the only player to win titles on all surfaces in 2022. Moreover, she scripted her return to the top 10 after a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open.
Head-to-head: Tied at 1-1. Iga Swiatek was ranked 55th when she beat seven-year-older Caroline Garcia, 7-6, 6-1, in the first round of Cincinnati in 2019. The French player caused a mega upset in front of Polish crowd and on clay when she won 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinal of Warsaw 250 this July.
