Caroline Garcia was the first to take an early break lead in her match against Iga Swiatek on Thursday but failed to win any further service games. In a reversal of her three-set victory over the three-time major champion in Warsaw in July, she was handily beaten by the Pole this time, 6-3, 6-2.
She started out with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Coco Gauff, a welcome return to WTA Finals after five years. In 2017, while on her singles debut at this event, the Frenchwoman was also 1-1 going into her last round-robin match and beat eventual champion Caroline Wozniacki for a semifinal place.
She didn't have any exciting results immediately before this week and has lost five of her last seven matches. But she owns 33 main draw wins since the start of June, more than anyone else, and is the only player to have titles on all surfaces this year (Bad Homburg, Warsaw and Cincinnati).
Daria Kasatkina started her WTA Finals debut with an unsurprising 6-2, 6-3 defeat to world no. 1 Iga Swiatek. She also found herself in deep trouble against home favorite Coco Gault, trailing the first set by 41 and standing two points from losing it in the decider, before bouncing back 7-6, 6-3.
Her victory over the American has turned this match into a virtual quarterfinal battle. The Russian is carrying a bizarre form in which she has failed to win multiple matches in seven of her last nine tournaments but converted the two exceptions into season defining title runs in San Jose and Granby.
She has now won 25 hard-court matches this year, her new highest single-season count in tour-level main draw setting. Looking for her seventh semifinal of the season, the world no. 8 would be aware of the fact that she has not lost a match from a set advantage since 2021 Montreal (32-0).
Head-to-head: 1-1. In both matches, it was Caroline Garcia who won the opening set. But while the Frenchwoman claimed a straight-set victory in the first round of 2019 Wuhan, the Russian fought from a set and break deficit to survive 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in San Jose in 2021 en route to the finals.
