Caroline Garcia pulled off her most emphatic victory of the campaign against fifth seed Maria Sakkari, thrashing last year's WTA Finals semifinalist in this year's semifinal, 6-3, 6-2. She won 23-of-30 first-serve points and added six to her season-leading ace count, which currently stands at 379.

She has become the oldest finalist of the WTA Finals since Venus Williams in 2017, the year she made her only previous singles appearance and made as far as the semifinals. Additionally, the 29-year-old has also been a two-time doubles participant at this event, in 2015 (RR) and 2016 (SF).

She has shown no signs of fatigue in the aftermath of her grueling last round-robin match against Daria Kasatkina, edging, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6, in two and a half hours. There were some concern regarding her immediate form when she came into Texas after winning only one match in her last three events.

At the start of June, the Frenchwoman was outside the top 70 and hadn't reached a final in three years. She has since won 37 matches, more than anyone else in the period, and lifted three titles. It includes beating Petra Kvitova in the Cincinnati final as a qualifier for her biggest title in five years.

Overall she owns a 10-3 record in finals. The 29-year-old is looking to overcome Frenchwomen's 1-4 win-loss have in the championship round of WTA Finals. Amelie Mauresmo is the only French champion in history, winning it in a year that featured an all-French final with Mary Pierce in 2005.

Aryna Sabalenka saved her best serving performance of the entire season for the semifinal against world no. 1 Iga Swiatek. After getting beaten by the Pole four times this year, including at the US Open semifinal, the Belarusian stopped the losing streak with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 shocker in two hours.

She won more than 80% of first-serve points in the first and third sets, alongside hitting 12 aces - her most in a single match this year-though it was a bit negated by nine double-faults. It's the third time she has beaten a world no. 1, after Ashleigh Barty wins at 2019 Wuhan and 2021 Madrid.

When she landed in Fort Worth, the 24-year-old had fewest wins in 2022 among all participants. She had also not beaten a top 10 player on hard courts in the season but remedied for it following close wins over Ons Jabeur (stood two points from loss) and Jessica Pegula in the round robin.

She has not won a title since defeating Ash Barty in the Madrid final in May 2021 and lost both of her 2022 finals to Iga Swiatek in Stuttgart and Ekaterina Alexandrova in 's-Hertogenbosch in straight sets. Overall she commands a 10-7 win-loss in career finals and a better 9-2 on hard courts.

It's been 11 years since a Belarusian played a WTA Finals final the only time, with Victoria Azarenka losing to Petra Kvitova in three sets. The world no. 7 is likely to display her resilience in case of a drawn-out match, given she has played more three-setters than anyone else in 2022 (15-13).

Head-to-head: 2-2. The pair have met in China and Cincinnati twice each, with three of their four meetings entering the third set. They crossed paths for the first time in nearly four years while competing in the semifinals of Cincinnati this August, with Caroline Garcia slipping past 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
